Ethics and Governance

The Barwon Infant Study (BIS) operates under the highest standards of research integrity and ethics. We work in close partnership with the Barwon Health Research Ethics, Governance & Integrity (REGI) Unit to ensure all protocols, updates, and research projects meet national and institutional requirements.

Our research is guided by frameworks from:

  • National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC)
  • Victorian Managed Insurance Authority (VMIA)
  • Victorian Consultative Council for Human Research

We are committed to ethical, transparent, and responsible research practices.

Research Opportunities

Honours, Masters, PhD, or Postdoctoral research opportunities

We are not currently advertising any Honours, Masters, PhD, or Postdoctoral research opportunities. All new positions will be posted here as they become available. In the meantime, if you have specific queries or would like to discuss potential future projects, please contact bis@barwonhealth.org.au.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers will have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in child health research. Based in the Child Health Research Unit, volunteers will partake in appointments that are being conducted on school aged children. Volunteers will gain experience in:

  • Obtaining informed consent from study participants
  • Ethical considerations in research
  • Anthropometric measurements
  • Visual and retinal assessments
  • Lung function assessments
    • Multiple breath washout
    • Forced Oscillometry Technique
    • Spirometry
  • Skin prick testing
  • Phlebotomy
  • Develop skills in data collection using REDCap
  • Participation in BIS fieldwork meetings and child health research group meetings
  • Engage in collaborative research discussions, interact with experienced research assistants, and get a firsthand look at how research projects are conceptualised and managed

This hands-on experience provides volunteers with valuable insights into the practical aspects of conducting research and allows students to be an integral part of the Barwon Infant Study and contribute to improving child health outcomes.

Benefits of this program:

  • Practical research experience
  • Develop technical and analytical skills
  • Fosters networking opportunities with professionals in child health research
  • Contribute to groundbreaking research in child health

Volunteers with the appropriate qualifications or current students are welcome to apply. Please send a short email to BIS via our email (BIS@barwonhealth.org.au) with the following information:

  • First and last name
  • The exact months, days and hours per week that you are available to volunteer
  • Details of current qualifications and/or study
  • The reason you would like to volunteer
