Exploring the Lifelong Influence of Early Development

BIS Primary School Review
With many of our original BIS participants now reaching 13 years of age, we’ve recently completed the BIS Primary School Review — a major milestone in our journey together. This review represents the next chapter in our efforts to understand how early life shapes lifelong health.
Thanks to the ongoing support and dedication of BIS families, we've been able to carry out this important phase with the help of three National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Project Grants.
These have supported our deep dives into immune, respiratory, neurodevelopmental, and cardiovascular health throughout the early school years.
What Did the Review Involve?
The Primary School Review was designed to be comprehensive while remaining family-friendly.
Participation included: • A short introductory phone call (5–10 minutes) • An online questionnaire for parents (approx. 60 minutes) • An appointment on the BIS bus or at the Child Health Research Unit
During the visit, we offered: • Neurodevelopmental assessments • Dental, vision, lung and cardiovascular health checks • Skin prick allergy testing • Blood collection • Accelerometer (activity monitor) for the child to wear for 1 week
These assessments give us an unparalleled view of health and development during the transition into school life.
The BIS Bus
A standout feature of this phase has been the introduction of the BIS Bus — a mobile research clinic funded by the Gandel Foundation and supported by Jayco.
This innovative approach allowed our team to visit children at school, reducing the need for travel and making it easier for families to stay involved.
Since hitting the road in December 2019, the BIS Bus has made health assessments more convenient and enjoyable for families, with children excited to step aboard and take part in the study.
